Are you a completest when it comes to your favorite recording artists? (Meaning do you have to have everything they release even if its another best of compilation or something of that nature)
For the most part, yes, though there are some favorite bands that I've been neglecting because of lack of funds. But for artists like Duran Duran, Erasure, The Beatles and Elvis Costello, I try to have everything I can get my hands on. I still need a few discs to complete my Costello collection. With Erasure I need to get my hands on some CD singles from some of the previous albums. I'm also working on getting all the Gordon Lightfoot CDs.

Obsession is my middle name.

Have you ever bought more than one copy of a certain album? If you did, tell us why.
Yes, and I did it more when I didn't have a CD Burner. I have special edition copies of several CDs. As far as recent CDs go, I have 3 copies of The Moody Blues December. Don't ask.

Which bands make up the majority of your collection? How many CDs, Lps, cassettes etc?
Elvis Costello there has to be at least 50 discs.
Duran Duran 100 + and the same for Erasures. I have CD Singles, promos, you name it. I love these two bands.


Do you buy an album from a band just because you like them or do you wait until you've heard it before making the purchase?
With some artists I do. I'd never do it for Madonna since she has been putting out some serious garbage lately.

~ What songs remind you of the end of summer?
One song comes to mind, Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward. Oh and Don Henley's Boys Of Summer. It would be a crime if I forgot that one.

~ What were/are some of the musical needs you had fill before heading back to school?
I always made a bunch of mix tapes for the car before going back to school. I commuted for the 4 years I spent at California University of PA, so I had to have some good tunes, because the radio sucks, and The Pickle wasn't there then.


~ The Beach Boys said, "Be True To Your School" are you?
Nope. Never was, never will be, and wild horses couldn't drag me to a class reunion.

~ Are there any songs that really make you think of the classroom, whether it be the lower grades, high school or college?
The Musical Chess particularly Nobody's Side and One Night In Bangkok make me think of my first year of college which was rather tumultuous.

What bands from the 90's that have broken up do you miss?
Semisonic though I'm not sure they've officially broken up, but they haven't had a "real" release since.
Are Smash Mouth still around? I saw that Sugar Ray was doing a concert this year, but I think that I miss looking at the lead singer rather than listening to them, though I have to say I really loved that Every Morning song, even though it was played into the ground.

What was your favorite song from that decade?

How did you feel about the whole "grunge" genre that popped up in the early 90's?
One genre that singlehandedly made an entire generation of people not wash or comb their damn hair and the music itself was vile with very few exceptions. I won't even start on my "Kurt Cobain was a talentless man" rant because it's not nice to speak unkindly of the dead. Suffice to say grunge = crap in my book.

What was your favorite 1 hit wonder of that decade?
Hands down it had to be Chumbawumba's Tubthumper. That one still gets stuck in my head every time I hear it.

* Note: Elvis Costello doesn't make the list, though he had some of his most awesome music in the 90's, I wasn't listening to him much then. Actually I wasn't listening to him at all.

Back in the day before the internet ruled the earth and people went to malls etc...

What was your favorite record store?
Oasis Music, which was a division of the National Record Mart chain was my very favorite. It was a huge store located near South Park off Route 88. My CD collection grew large partially due to that store. I loved it to pieces and went there at least twice a month.

Are there any non-chain stores that you still frequent for your music needs?
When I'm in Pittsburgh I try to hit Dave's Music Mine on the South Side. They have a huge vinyl section in the basement of the store, plus they carry imports! That's a big Squee for a girl that loves music from Europe.

What was your favorite "find" at your favorite store?
I found a Duran Duran poster at Oasis back in the early 90's from the early days. I can't remember if it was Rio era or Seven & The Ragged Tiger era, but the poster was mint, and I paid only 50 cents for it!!!

I know. I'm a day late and a dollar short this week. Things were crazy yesterday though.

Are there any bands that you like now that you didn't like when you first heard them?
Most of the bands that I like from the 80's I didn't like then. It took The Wedding Album for me to obtain my deep and misplaced love for Duran Duran. In the 80's I hated them. They were overplayed and obnoxious. Now they wish they could get some airplay, however they are still obnoxious.

What bands that don't record anymore do you miss the most?
Oh there are so many. Oingo Boingo is high on the list. Glass Tiger is another one, though they still tour. So many of my favorite 60's bands aren't recording anymore. It would be fantastic to hear new material from Herman's Hermits or The Grass Roots. All you get from these people are those independently done live recordings. Blergh.

Did you ever buy an album by an artist you didn't necessarily like but because everyone else had a copy, you had to as well. If so, what was it.
In a word yes. I've done it twice and I'm ashamed of both albums. I own a copy of Michael Jackson's Thriller on vinyl ~shudders~ I also own a copy of Nirvana's Nevermind. BLERGH! I have no idea why I bought that one, except that I was caught up in the wave of bad music that started in the early 90's. I hate Nirvana with a passion that cannot be described. I will say one thing, I don't have that cassette anymore. It got tossed in the garbage, where it belongs, because I find Nirvana's music, and I use the word music very lightly, to be garbage.

I think at one time I was a member of all of them; Columbia House, Play, and BMG. Now that BMG is the only one left, that's the only one I still belong to. I've got some good deals there too.

Columbia House used to offer 12 CDs for a penny. If you could choose 12 CDs what would they be. (Domestic releases only to make it realistic)

The shipping costs! Lordy! That's where these blighters make all their money. That's why I tend to order when they have a "Free Shipping" special. They charge per disc, so if you're getting a good deal on a box set, you lose it on shipping. Blergh!

Did you have any bands that you were ashamed of liking in your younger days?
No, at least not at the time I liked them. I ended up in many a verbal battle over my music loves. It was a war against Culture Club and Michael Jackson. I HATE WACKO JACKO and I always will.

Do you look back on some of the things you listened to and groan? If so, what were they?
Yes, and it's Culture Club that makes me groan. The music was great, in that cheesy 80's way, but there were only 2 really good albums and each only had a song or two that looking back have had staying power. Colour By Numbers was the best of the bunch. And if I could get past how vile Boy George turned out I might be able spin it more often, but when I listen I get a bad mental picture and I can't keep the music on.

Up through the 80's there were a lot of music related tv shows did you watch any? (That weren't on Mtv or Vh-1)
OH lordy, I watched so many of them; Friday Night Videos, Solid Gold (the worst of the bunch with those slutty near naked dancers), and whatever the video show was on HBO. (That's where I first saw the video for Olivia Newton-John's Physical)

A good many singers/musicians made films that were pretty awful, but have a cult following, which ones do you like?
Not sure it has a cult following but Paul McCartney's Give My Regards To Broad Street is a silly little movie. I can't forget Ringo's Caveman either. Oh and lastly...Polly had this one on her list and I agree, Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John. I can still watch that one over and over.

Are any of your youthful guilty pleasures still favorites now? Or do you pretend like you never liked them?
I can't call Culture Club or Wham! favorites now, but I still like them. I like Bonnie Tyler too. I will not pretend I never liked them either. I admit fully to my awful taste as a child! But hey, I liked The Monkees and The Beatles then too!

What type of music do you find to be the best to sleep to?
Perhaps the next question is the better one. When I'm sleepy I can conk out to just about anything. Though I have to say, if I have any preferences they would be artists like Grey Eye Glances, Julia Fordham, The Moody Blues, and my special Elvis Costello sleep mix CD.

Is there any kind of music that you absolutely can't fall asleep to?
Not really if you go by genre etc. I think I've fallen asleep to Def Leppard and Poison a few times. (Scary, I know) What usually keeps me awake are those songs that make me think. Not about topics, mind you, but about situations and people. I have a lot of songs that will do that, so I have to make sure they don't make it on a mix CD that I'll play at night when I'm about to go to bed, or I'll be up all night, fretting over something I can't do a damn thing about.

If anyone artist could sing you to sleep who would it be and what would they sing to you?
Ah..so many voices...so many songs...so many answers that would have nothing to do with them singing me to sleep, but rather getting into bed with me after they were done with their song.

I wouldn't mind Elvis Costello showing up to sing Long Journey Home to me. That would be truly Heavenly.

Are there any bands that you've seen live that didn't impress you, or that sounded better on CD?
I don't think there were any artists that didn't impress me in anyway. I will say that Davy Jones does sound better on record then live on some tracks, particularly Daydream Believer. That song has always been a let down for me when I've heard it in concert, because it's such a favorite of mine.


Live albums? Love em or hate em? Why?
Hate em! Unless they are a bootleg, live CDs just suck. They filter out the good parts most of the time and I really don't want to listen to a concert that I didn't attend. Bootleg recordings are different, because all the little nuances stay in. Plus I like having copies of shows that I was at.

Mtv started the "Unplugged" concept...do you have any favorites and what are your feelings on the "Unplugged" series.
I loved Duran Duran's Unplugged as well as R.E.M.'s and a few others, but it was a concept that got old very quickly. Just like VH-1's storytellers, too much of a good thing can be bad. Oh and Unplugged Layla is the most vile thing I ever heard in my life. Eric Clapton should be ashamed.


What is your favorite live act?
Hands down, Elvis Costello. I shouldn't think that would surprise anyone, right?

Nothing in Pittsburgh that really turns up the heat for me anymore, but Bally's on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City has a great beach bar. It's right on the beach, actually and the drinks are great and they have a live band on the weekends. Bliss!

What sound (genre) defined the 80's for you?
For me it was definitely the New Wave sound. I loved the British Invasion of the 80's. There were so many good bands out of the UK then, Duran Duran, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Pet Shop Boys. The list could go on forever and ever. And yes, it's CHEESY POP music. I'll have some wine with my cheesy 80's music thank you very much.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - a totally awesome gothic/new wave/punk band. Siouxsie has an incredible voice that's still going strong.

Erasure - Vince Clarke and Andy Bell are synthpop titans!

Elvis Costello - Snarky brilliance, n'uff said.

Crowded House - Jangly guitar goodness, combined with wonderful vocals and brilliant songwriting. They have a new album out...I can't wait for it.

Icehouse - Australian brilliance. Electric Blue and Crazy are still 2 of my favorite songs.

The Monkees or The Beatles...which would be..or which was your favorite band or do you like them both.
I love both bands. The Beatles are superior of course, because they are true artists, but the Monkees have shown over the years that they are worthy of a place in the annals of music history, as one of the most lovable bands of all time. Plus they really did have talent when they were allowed to use it. I love me some Fab and Pre-Fab Four.

1. What music do you associate with vacations?
The Moody Blues are definitely one band that I associate with vacations as they were the reason I went on a few of them. If not for a few concerts I never would have gone to Atlantic City. For that I thank them. However I will never go to Atlantic City to see them again, because I want to enjoy my stay there without having to worry about a concert.

Cyndi Lauper's A Night To Remember is one particular album I remember from vacations past. I took the cassette with me as we drove across the state to Lancaster.

This was always one of my favorite Cyndi Lauper albums too. I love the songs Insecurious and Like A Cat.

One year one of my favorite bands released a CD while I was on vacation. (Lancaster again) I bought the CD at a little shop in a mall along US RT 30 across from the HOJO's that we were staying at.

If I'm reading I like relaxing, chill out tunes, The Moodies, Annie Haslam, Enya, Grey Eye Glances, but if I'm out and about walking on a nice walking path, I'll want perkier music like Roxette, Erasure or Duran Duran.

What musical formats do you remember (CD, Cassette, LP etc)?I think I've had something in every format over the years. I still have loads of LPs and 45's...I think I even have an 8-track of The Concert For Bangladesh. Mind you they weren't making those anymore when I really started to get into music, at least I don't think they were.

What was your favorite format 5 years ago? 10? What is it now?
5 years ago it was the CD.
10 years ago the cassette dying but I didn't have a CD player in my car so those little obnoxious plastic things were really important to me then.
Now the CD is still important and a favorite because I like to have tangible proof that I have music. I love digital media, but it's taking too much on faith that my music won't get swallowed by my computer or wonky mp3 player at some point.

What was your first portable music player? What is your current portable music player?
If we go by truly portable (as in portable with ease) I had a kickin' yellow Sony Walkman. It was a slim one with fancy earbuds and it cost a small fortune at the time. It was also a piece of poop that broke faster than any Walkman I've ever owned.

If you count a boombox as portable, my first CD player was a Magnavox boombox that I saved months to buy. I loved it to pieces.

Now I'm the proud parent of a Creative Zen Micro 4 GB in a lovely shade of pink. I also have a little 128 Creative Muvo. I love them both dearly, even though I'm still coveting a 30 GB Zen Vision.

What is your favorite way to share music with your friends?
My favorite way is by the old tried and true mix CD, that way I can share more than one or two songs with friends. I've always said, you know you're a friend if I've offered to make a mix for you or you're on my Christmas CD card mailing list.

What song or album do you feel the need to share with anyone who will listen?
Grey Eye Glances - A Little Voodoo



Actually I try to force all Grey Eye Glances albums on anyone that will listen. They are truly a great band. They need to do a new album soon, very soon!

Do you ever lend your CDs/tapes/etc to friends or family?
NO! My CDs don't leave my house. I'll copy them for you, but never, ever, ever will they leave my four walls. I have an irrational fear that they may never come back or come back scratched to high heaven.

Did you ever discover a musical love because someone shared something with you? (mp3? Mix CD or tape)
It was through sharing that I discovered Dar Williams, Grey Eye Glances, Emm Gryner and Thea Gilmore to name but a few. Music sharing has broadened my horizons. So has LaLa.

What is your favorite record/CD shop? Is it still in existence?
My favorite record shop was Oasis, particularly the one that was on Library Rd in South Park. I used to bug the manager there all the time. I even took him to dinner one time. He got me loads of Duran Duran posters and we used to talk about Bowie. He was damn obnoxious, but then again, so am I. We were probably a matched pair, only we never could get it together.

Sadly Oasis was part of the National Record Mart chain that went out of business several years ago. I miss those stores. They were reasonable and they had a great selection.

Do you still buy most of your CDs in stores or do you purchase music online?
Amazon and Half.com are my best friends now. I seldom buy anything in a store for 2 reasons; cost (way too high) and selection (there is none).

What music store do you consider the world's best kept secret. (Meaning you can find anything there)?
Dave's Music Mine on Carson Street in Pittsburgh. They have a fantastic selection and they still sell used vinyl. Squee! In the 80's it used to be Eide's, but my musical needs are different.

What was one "hidden treasure" you found while shopping for music?
I was at the Oasis that was near Ross Park Mall and I found a copy of Spandau Ballet's Parade. This was in the mid 90's and most of their material was out of print. I picked up that CD for 8 bucks and it was like new! And I wanted that disc for one song, though I love most of it...The song? I'll Fly For You. It's still one of my favorite songs by Spandau Ballet.

I wish I would have bought what CD?
I wish I would have bought the 2 fanclub issue CDs from the Erasure Fanclub, but at the time I was short of cash and I let my fanclub membership lapse. These two discs now fetch a pretty penny on Ebay.

I wish I hadn't bought this CD?
Duran Duran's Thank You. I went out of my way and bought it on it's release day, because I was truly obsessed with them at the time. I still buy their stuff as soon as I can, but this album is a real stinker. Why they chose to murder other people's songs is beyond me, and murder them they did, with the exception of Perfect Day and perhaps their rendition of White Lines.

I wish I had gone to this concert?
Diana Krall played the Benedum Center when she toured for The Girl In The Other Room. There were tickets on the day of the show, but I like a fool didn't go. I will kick myself for this until I finally get to see Mr. Costello's missus.

I wish I hadn't gone to this concert?
The last tour Poison did that came through da 'Burgh. I liked Poison back in their hey day. I liked several bands...but seriously, I don't know why I agreed to going to this show. I went with a friend who loves Poison and all the bands that went along with them. Me....I prefer Def Leppard...if I'm feeling in a hair metal type mood. I hope I never get dragged to a show like that again.

I wish I had bought this piece of memorabilia?
I went to see The Devlins at Rosebud in the 90's. The Devlins are a wonderful Irish band that isn't nearly as well known as they should be. I have nothing as a reminder of that show, which only cost 5 bucks! Damn, I didn't even buy a damn t-shirt!

I wish I hadn't bought this piece of memorabilia?
When I went to my first Duran Duran show in 93' I bought every t-shirt they were selling. ARGH! I still have them and most are pretty pathetic looking because they didn't make girly shirts then. Thank god the concert t-shirt industry has wised up and started making the baby doll shirts for most bands. But lordy...all those shirts I have from other shows that I'll never wear because they are bulky and obnoxious!
