What Happened To TV

My mom and I were having a discussion about all the shows we've watched over the years and how tv really has lost something in the last 20 years.

Family tv is gone.

Unless you can stomach the shows on Disney and Nick, some of which are cute, like Good Luck Charlie and Jessie, but for the most part, all the shows geared for families and kids have one of their "stars" branching out into music, regardless of weather or not they can sing.

Seriously, chicky from Good Luck Charlie, you can't carry a tune in a bucket! Give it up!

Where did tv go that was fun to watch. That you could sit down with every member of your family and be entertained.

I admit, I still love reruns of Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeannie.

These were good shows.

Fun shows!

There's not much in the lines of fun anymore

TV is too serious now and really grown up. The networks have made it so that you have to have multiple viewing locations, because parents can't stand to watch the kids shows, and the adult shows are too grown up for kids.

Sigh...

This is where you insert comments about the good ole days.

So what are some of your favorite classic tv shows.

Busy Busy Busy

This is what I did this weekend.

1. 2 loads of laundry...2 big loads

2. Put up curtains in 2 rooms.

3. Grocery shopping

4. Braved Walmart

5 Went to the YMCA Wed-Saturday

Yay me!

Maybe in a few weeks the house will look less like a hovel....

One can hope right?

But I am making progress...now who wants to paint the place and fix our two porches and while I'm at it...where is money fairy when you need them?

I wanted to do my Top 5 On Friday today, but there's something more significant about this day.

5 years ago today, my grandma passed away.

Yes, she was 101, but that doesn't make it any less painful. In some ways it makes it more so, because she seemed to invincible. If anyone had the key to immortality, it would have been my grandma.

More To Goodwill

I've already got another 4 bags to go to Goodwill.

The curtains have arrived and hopefully I'll be able to get them hung over the weekend.

Found this:

I may get rid of a lot of my childhood stuff, but never any books by Richard Scarry, no matter how beat up they are, and this book has been through the ringer!

I wish we weren't such pack rats. Things would be so much easier, but my mother loves cookbooks and post cards. You have no idea how many ancient Home Cooking magazines are in this house! It is maddening.

I wish I had help, but there's no one that really could do anything except maybe run back and forth to Goodwill for me.

Maybe some day this house will be clean!

My Goal

I know there are things I can't fix in my house. I don't have the money, and unless Extreme Makeover Home Edition comes knockin'...well things just won't be happening.

But I really want to take whatever extra money I can get to make things look halfway decent.

Nothing has been done in our house for over 20 years.

I think that's the last time any paint touched the walls etc.

I've been slowly dejunking room by room.

I am the garbage man's worst nightmare.

Can I Get A Yay Me!

For the first time in yonks, I feel like I've done quite a bit on a Saturday night.

1. I took 6 bags of stuff to Goodwill.
2. I took another bag of books to the lending library at the YMCA.
3. Bought and set up my awesome folding bookcase that I got @ Ollie's Bargain Outlet for $20!
4. Made a kick ass veggie soup!
5. Continued to dejunk and declutter the upstairs.

Not bad for a days work.

Now I think I deserve a blissful hour of television.

It's supernatural Saturday after all, and it is almost time for Doctor Who!

After that I plan to put a nice french toast casserole in the fridge so I don't have to go to McDonald's in the morning for breakfast rations.

McDonald's breakfast is the worst, but I'm so its bitch on Sunday mornings.

But not this weekend!

I'm feeling super productive!

Let's hope it stays that way.

Its Time For Some Randomosity

~ I really need to get my music geekery back on. I miss loving new music. I miss listening to new music. On a plus I did get to listen to the new Little Big Town album, Tornado and I loved it.

~ Stink Bugs are taking over the world...make them go away!! Or at least tell my cats to eat them!

~ Finally watched all of the last Doctor Who episode. This weekend really wasn't a good time for TV viewing. I hope this Saturday is different, because the upcoming episode looks stellar. I will be posting a review of Cold War on Thursday at Wenches

~ Dad should be coming home tomorrow. They've given him different antibiotics this time and some IV fluids.

~ The great thing about the gift shop at the hospital 25 cent used paperbacks and yes, I've bought loads of them!

~ I want to say something about the bombings in Boston, but really there are no words.

Quick Update

Dad is back in the hospital with pneumonia.

Not much else to say, except that I don't have much to say.

Big sigh

A Whovian Rant

Doctor Who is one of my favorite shows. I watch it pretty faithfully. It brings me great joy. However I have to say, the fans don't.

Why do all the shows/bands etc that I love have fans that are really lame?

The show has had 11 actors playing the lead part over the last 50 years. (for those of you that don't know).

It was off the air for quite a bit of time before coming back in 2005 or 6, I can't remember exactly, so you have two eras of the show, the Classic era which is Doctor's 1-7, and the reboot era 8-11. I'm including 8 because he was just in a film version made in 96.

The thing is the fans now really know Doctors 9-11 better than the originals for the most part..and the younguns really like 10, played by David Tennant

David Tennant w/Catherine Tate in The Unicorn & The Wasp

It is easy to see how you could go all fangirly over him. He sure do have a purdy face. But it isn't his Doctor I'm calling into question. I loved him in that role, just as I love Matt Smith and all the others, it is the Doctor/Rose relationship.

Rose Tyler was the first companion in the new series, played by Billie Piper.

I kind of liked things better when the Doctor wasn't emotionally attached to his companions, you know in the not so leg humpy way that Rose was. I kinda found Rose Tyler's character to be a bit of a skank, but the whole world seems to love her, so what do I know.

So basically the Whovian Universe is full of people that ship 10/Rose and those that hate on all the other Doctors except 4, played by Tom Baker.

GAH!

I thought that loving a show meant just that...loving a show.

I pretty much like all the Doctors. Not fond of all the companions..but the Doctors I like and the beauty of the show is that it can change itself every so many years. Stop complaining!

Oh and for the record, best companions, Sarah Jane Smith, Donna Noble and THE PONDS!

Too Many Good Books

Ever have a period where you read a bunch of excellent books (whatever genre you like) back to back and you feel like you are running on a reading high.

Yup that's me, right now.

Even this slightly smutty romance I'm reading that's quite predictable is good in that Harlequin Desire kind of way.

I don't know what I'll do when I get a real dud.

You know, the kind of book that makes turning the pages difficult.

I think when that happens I just might cry.

What was your longest streak of awesome reads?

Easy Dinner

Chili Dog Casserole

Ingredients

2 cans of chili with beans
1 bag of 8 inch tortillas
1 package of your favorite hot dogs (I love Nathan's when they are on sale...but hell the 99 cent kind at Save A Lot are great too)
As much Cheddar as your little heart desires or can handle without going into cardiac arrest.

Directions

1. Spread one can of beans on the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan.
2. Roll hot dogs in tortillas and place seam side down on the pan.
3. Cover with second can of chili and top with cheese
4. Bake at 425 for about 25- 30 minutes

These are great with tater tots or seasoned fries!

Yay Spring

Allow me to say that the only bad things about the warmer weather are the following.

1. Stink Bugs....and lots of them.

2. The ankle I sprained last summer is swollen and achy.

I think I can live with both, tough the second does require some medication. My cats will eventually take care of the stink bugs.

It is so freaking wonderful to see flowers in bloom and no snow in the forecast!

Oh and it is supposed to be near 80 on Wednesday.

Woo hoo!

Welcome Spring! You're late in coming, but we're happy to see ya!

Still Sick

I've had a cold for 5 days.

5 damn days, dammit!

I'm getting sick of this.

Yesterday I felt a little bit better and fool that I am, I tried to do a few things, other than just resting. Not a smart idea. Today I feel worse.

Thankfully the sore throat is gone, but I'm still congested and miserable and on top of it all, nothing went right today from the time I left for that liturgical ministers meeting until about 5 o'clock, when things calmed down.

I've come to the conclusion.

1. I doesn't do you any good to be a minister in church. We had a workshop today for lector, Eucharistic ministers and USHERS! OMG Ushers need to be taught what to do? WTF! (sorry God) I felt like the priests had nothing good to say about the current ministers it was all, you are doing this wrong. It doesn't make you feel good, especially when you've been part of the ministry for 20 + years.

2. I really think I'd be better off slinging burgers. There are some times when I'm pretty sure that' might even be too taxing on my brain.

3. Nothing I want to do ever goes the way that I planned.

4. Weekends suck, I don't know why I look forward to them.

On and upside, and yes there was kind of one, today's Doctor Who episode was amazing.

Top 5 On Friday

Top 5 songs that are emotionally moving

1. Anthem from Chess (love Josh Groban's version)

2. Bring Him Home from Les Miserables (it was hard to choose a version of this song. Alfie Boe, however has a voice that is swoonworthy)

3. Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar (Steve Balsamo is my kinda Jesus)

4. Music Of The Night from Phantom Of The Opera (The only version I will consider is sung by Michael Crawford..HE IS THE PHANTOM)

5. Hallelujah (I'm loving Chris Mann's version right now)

Sick

I know it was too good to last.

I haven't had a cold or any other nasty thing for a few years.

Until yesterday.

Sore throat, headache...sinuses.

Yuck.

If you don't see me around..its because I'm sicker than a dog...

Woof
