The Who was awesome!
I must admit that I missed a few halftime performances.
Madonna's was less than memorable.
I disagree with you, Andrea. I saw Paul at both Citi Field and Yankee Stadium and he was incredible. Every singer's voice changes because of use. Have you heard Justin Hayward's new song? He's a shadow of his old self, voice wise. Nevertheless, McCartney is a legend and I hope he goes on until he's in a wheelchair!
I don't know Diane, I've heard him live on SNL and at the Jubilee and and few times before that..his voice is shot...and Hey Jude doesn't back a fun punch anymore. I think he needs to take the advice of Grace Slick and bow out gracefully before he becomes a joke. Most in the UK think he is one already. As for Justin..I like the new song. Sure its probably a toss back from Kings Of The Kingdom..I know a bunch of the songs have ancient demos going around, but Jus' voice isn't nearly as gone as Paulie's. Truth be told..rockers at 70...shouldn't be...I saw Gordon Lightfoot a few years ago..and he's still a remarkable performer but health has taken quite a toll on his gorgeous voice too :(
My office colleagues love my rendition of "Hey, Jude" as it would have been sung by a rabid Nazi. Of course, it helps to be drunk when you hear it, but still ...
Well, I will give you that. But when you see Paul at a live performance, with the band and most likely backing tracks, he still sounds good. He was my Beatle and I loved him since I was 5 years old so I'm sure that's clouding my judgment. I haven't been able to like Justin's new song yet but my husband insisted on buying the album. He believes in giving it a chance. He's probably right. Gordon Lightfoot - always wanted to see him. He's had really bad health problems (lung cancer I think?) which most likely really hurts his voice. Sad. Why do we have to get old!!!!
Diane: Granted I don't think Paul's voice is as bad as say Mick Jagger's. Thank God for clean living after a time, but some of the fiestier songs of his hey day are too much for it.
As for Justin...I don't think it is his voice that's going..so much as the songs aren't as good, but then look to Paul...when it comes to new material..he hasn't had a quality new album since Flaming Pie, which was right before Linda passed away. I'm actually kind of anxious to hear a cleaned up veriosn of It's Cold Outside Of Your Heart, which I have an mp3 demo of somewhere.
PS..with Gord..it was a stomach aneurysm and then a mini stroke. He's doing good now, but his voice isn't the same, which is really sad.
